TEN YEARS OF EXPERIENCE WITH
CONSUMER EDUCATION IN NETHERLANDS
On this rst European Conference on consumer education I presume you don’t need
to be convinced of the necessity of consumer education. In one way or another, you are all
engaged in promoting consumer education in your country. You’re teaching it at school,
or you’re creating the conditions for teachers to do so, you are developing textbooks or
courses on vital consumer issues, for your own use at school, or for others, perhaps you
have lobbyed to get consumer education integrated in the curricula of different types of
schools. In short: you have no doubts whatsoever that consumer education – both inside
and outside school, both for youngsters and for adults – is an important tool in the whole
consumer policy.
Yet a strong plea for consumer education is necessary more than ever in our country.
For years our country may have been one of the forerunners in consumer education, now
our government has serious doubts about the necessity of nancing consumer education,
so its position may be in danger.
The Dutch Consumers’ Union (Consumentenbond) doesn’t have the nancial means
to nance the action programme
for consumer education on its own.
Therefore we must reect on our
present strategy, and maybe look for
new strategies, in which the European
Committee can play a prominent part.
But rst let me explain which
strategy we followed at the beginning,
and how it was readjusted during
